Traumatic spondylolisthesis of the axis.

This article reports the author’s experience in the management of fourteen cases of traumatic spondylolisthesis of the second on the third cervical vertebra. The group formed part of a series of seventy-seven cases of injury to the cervical spine treated over a four-year period (1963-66) at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Injury between the second and third vertebrae occurred sixteen times. In two of these cases the lesions were like those commonly seen at lower levels in the neck-one was a dislocation and the other a crush fracture. In the other fourteen cases there was a distinctive lesion, namely a fracture passing in a coronal plane downwards through the posterior part of each lateral mass of the axis (or through the adjacent pedicles) into the inferior vertebral notch, usually involving the foramen transversarium, the body of the axis being partly or wholly dislocated in relation to the body of the third cervical vertebra (Fig. 1).
